About Us

Hand crafted, home grown

Set at the foothills of the scenic Blue Ridge mountains, our brewery and taproom is a hard place to leave. Come by and enjoy a beer or three with your view.

Our Story

Beer with a view.

Go ahead, call it a mid-life crisis. We’d like to think we’re just two best friends who wanted to share a side-project. Andrew Messina, a fraternity brother at Tulane University way back in 1989 and myself, Dr. John Schoeb, sought to create a place for friends – old and new – to catch up and enjoy great beer and a view. What used to be the Crozet Moose Lodge 2164 is now a vibrant and welcoming brewery we call Pro Re Nata. This place is for you, as needed. Come on by, doctor’s orders.

Favorite Beer (Style): Bourbon Barrel Stouts

Craft Beer Community:

I love the variety of craft beers available today. Beer drinkers are fun!! And beer drinking folks have been enjoying this elixir for thousands of years.

PRN Perks:

It's all about the PEEPS!! Working with my fellow beer tenders behind the bar (the hustlers) makes it a pleasure to be part of the team. And I love to see our guests having a great time, around the fire, on the dance floor, and to see their eyes light up when they solve one of my parlor puzzles.

Who Am I:

Year round, I am a real estate investor/landlord. And for the last 28 winters, a professional senior ski patroller at Wintergreen Mountain. I love to scuba dive, be on a river, ski out of bounds, and spend time with my three awesome daughters.

Favorite Beer (Style):
PRN Beans Deep (Coffee Stout) & Doctor's Orders

Craft Beer Community:

I love the freedom, creativity and variability that comes with brewing on a small scale, and see craft brewers as artisans. I anticipate every batch of beer with curiosity and awe. I wonder what they're going to come up with next...

PRN Perks:

I am proud to serve a superior quality, locally made product. We are so lucky to have great brews made right here in Crozet! I enjoy seeing people taste and discover new beers, and also seeing their comfort in sitting down with a trusted favorite draft. It's so wonderful to be part of a positive and supportive community.

Who Am I:

My current incarnation is a vegetable farmer. I'm passionate about growing organically with methods that are healing for the earth, using hand tools as opposed to gas-powered equipment. I practice Aikido, a peaceful, non-violent martial art. This year I joined the Crozet Cycling Club and love riding around this beautiful county. I enjoy spinning yarn and knitting. In my former life, I played piccolo and flute in the Houston Symphony.
